WDVA to Observe Veterans Day at Ceremonies Statewide

WDVA to Observe Veterans Day at Ceremonies Statewide

MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) today announced that it will host four Veterans Day ceremonies throughout the state. The WDVA invites the public to attend. The theme for this year is “The Year of the Veteran.”

“On Veterans Day, we honor the legacy of those men and women veterans, those who are serving, and their families for the sacrifices they make for our freedom,” said WDVA Secretary John Scocos. “I encourage all citizens to honor all veterans not just on this day but throughout the year, and join us as we pay tribute to them.”

WDVA will host the following ceremonies. Veterans, their families and the public are invited to attend.

Friday, November 9 at 11:30 a.m. in the Wisconsin State Capitol rotunda in Madison. Highlights include:

  • Music by the St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy;
  • The posting of colors by the Milwaukee Veterans Council; and
  • Speakers are WDVA Secretary Scocos, Adjutant General Donald Dunbar and Purple Heart veterans, among others.

Sunday, November 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove. The home is located at 21425 G Spring Street, Union Grove. Highlights include:

  • The posting of colors by Kansasville AMVETS Post 911; and
  • Speakers are WDVA Secretary Scocos and World War II U.S. Submarine veteran Wally Stenavich, former director of the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove Glen Brower, among others.

Sunday, November 11 at 1:00 p.m. at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King. The home is located 3 miles west of Waupaca at N2665 County Road QQ, King. The event will be held in the Marden Memorial Center. Highlights include:

  • Music by the students of Waupaca High School Treble Clef Choir;
  • The posting of colors by Wisconsin Veterans Home at King Honor Guard; and
  • Speakers are Commandant Mary Hansen, Wisconsin Veterans Museum Director Michael Telzrow and keynote speaker Bill Crowley, former Commandant of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King.

Sunday, November 11 at 1:00 p.m. at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The cemetery is located just off Highway 53, three miles south of Spooner, at N4063 Veterans Way. Highlights include:

  • Music by Spooner High School Select Choir;
  • The ceremonial honor guard salute will be presented by Springbrook Trego Earl VFW Post 10568; and
  • Speakers are Cemetery Director Matthew Bergs, Colonel Paul Wharton, U.S. Army, retiring in 1998 after serving 30 years and keynote speaker Representative Nick Milroy from the 73rd Assembly District. Rep. Milroy served in the U.S. Navy 1992-1994 and served in the U.S. Naval Reserves 1994-2000.
