Museum Acquires Medal of Honor
(MADISON) – The Wisconsin Veterans Museum recently acquired a Medal of Honor. Staff Sergeant Gerald Endl was with the 128th Infantry Regiment of the 32nd Division and was originally from Fort Atkinson.
In July 1944, Endl acted heroically to save 11 men of his platoon during the Battle of Driniumor River, on New Guinea. He was killed in action while carrying the last wounded man to safety. The Medal of Honor was presented to his wife, Anna Marie Kirchoff, in a ceremony in 1945. The donation to the museum includes a significant amount of archival material including scrapbooks, photographs and letters. The museum is planning an exhibit to highlight the Medal of Honor, Gerald Endl’s life and his ultimate sacrifice for his country.
