DESCRIPTION:The Wisconsin Veterans Museum\, a Smithsonian Affiliate\, is pleased to present a special lecture: The National Native American Veterans Memorial: Honoring the Military Service of Native Americans by Rachelle B. Pablo (Diné)\, Museum Specialist with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. She will discuss the making of the National Native American Veterans Memorial that opened on November 11\, 2020\, in Washington D.C. and the enduring legacy of Indigenous military service. \nPlease register in advance HERE.  \nThis tribute to Native heroes at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian recognizes for the first time on a national scale the distinguished service of Native Americans in every branch of the US military. Simple and powerful\, timeless and inclusive\, the memorial creates an interactive yet intimate space for gathering\, remembrance\, reflection\, and healing. It welcomes and honors Native American veterans and their families\, and educates the public about their extraordinary contributions. \nThis lecture at the Fluno Center – Howard Auditorium on the UW-Madison Campus is free and part of the Making History\, Making Change Lecture Series. It is organized by Smithsonian Affiliations as part of the Smithsonian’s Our Shared Future: 250. SUMMARY:Decolonization\, the Algerian War\, and the Making of Modern Counterinsurgency
DESCRIPTION:The Algerian War was a pivotal event in the global struggle for decolonization. In this discussion of his new book\, Terrence G. Peterson highlights how the conflict also helped to transform the nature of modern warfare. As the French Army attempted to counter the struggle for Algerian independence\, it fashioned a radical project of armed social reform that sought not to preserve colonial rule unchanged\, but to refashion it for the Cold War era. As Peterson will make clear\, French officers’ efforts not only shaped how the Algerian War unfolded from its earliest months\, but also helped to forge the paradigm of “modern” warfare that has so often dominated strategic thinking since: counterinsurgency. \nPresenter: Terrence G.
