Virtual Drink & Draw January with Army Veteran Guest Artist: Amber Zora

Welcome to Sumi Ink Painting. Using an image from the  Wisconsin Veterans Museum collection, guest artist Amber Zora will teach about Sumi Ink Painting and explore materials with essentials about paper, brushes, brush strokes, controlling water, and ways to use your brushes to the fullest abilities. You will look at the elements of composition and design principles in historical ink paintings to discover how artists have used negative space. Also, we will discuss different image transfer techniques to map out a composition. Let's start working on an ink painting together and by the end of the course you will have the techniques you need to complete your ink painting on your own. Short Bio:Amber Zora is an interdisciplinary artist based in Rapid City, SD. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography + Integrated Media from Ohio University. Zora has exhibited her work in local and national galleries including the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Las Vegas Contemporary Art Center and the National Veteran Art Museum, among other notable spaces. Zora was enlisted in the US Army for eight years and deployed to Qayyarah West, Iraq as an ammunition specialist from 2006-2007 with the 592nd Ordnance Company. Drink & Draw events are a longstanding tradition in the art community where people gather to draw in a welcoming environment without inhibitions. Although the events often coincide with happy-hour style programming, there is no requirement or emphasis on alcoholic consumption. Some of the best attended Drink & Draws are dry and we are just fine with that. This free event will be based on 3 rounds of trivia, with each round focusing on topics such as: history, pop culture, names and places, events, and fun facts. Mess Night: Shayne Jarosz

Join us for our first Mess Night of 2022 featuring Shayne Jarosz, Special Events Coordinator at the Iwo Jima Association of America. Iwo Jima was returned to the nation of Japan in 1968, and the U.S. maintained an agreement that veterans or family would be able to visit Iwo Jima anytime they wanted to return. 75 years after the battle, the island is closed. Now, the Iwo Jima Association is the only organization authorized to travel to the island. Jarosz discusses the Battle of Iwo Jima's legacy and how we as Americans can help keep the island open. Each MESS NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM features a guest speaker, topic, dinner, drinks, and time to socialize before and after the talk. Registration will be required before the event. Movie Night Virtual Discussion- Shout at the Devil (1976)

Grab some popcorn and a seat in your favorite chair, and join us for a Movie Night and Virtual Discussion with the Wisconsin Veterans Museum Staff. While we can’t all be together, we can share discussion on major motion pictures that deal with the hardships, humor, and horrors of combat. For February, we will look at 1976's Shout at the Devil.  REGISTER HERE Your mission is to watch the movie, which is available from most libraries or on streaming services (we will not be watching the movie the night of the program), while thinking about the discussion questions we will provide you. On February 25, 2022, at 7:00 pm we’ll all meet via Zoom for a discussion led by museum staff. We will cover themes such as conflict, politics, pop culture, the military, and movie-making. After you register, we will email you the discussion questions and a link to join the virtual discussion via Zoom. This event is free and open to the public. African American Research: Strengthening and Connecting Families Through Genealogy

Join the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and President of the African American Genealogical Society of Milwaukee Patricia Glover-Howard, for a workshop focusing on African American genealogy.
