  • Book Talk with Steven K. Bailey

    Author Steven K. Bailey will speak about his new book, Target Hong Kong: A True Story of U.S. Navy Pilots at War (Osprey/Bloomsbury, 2024). Target Hong Kong recounts the untold story of the U.S. Navy airstrikes on Japanese-occupied Hong Kong during Operation Gratitude in 1945. The month-long operation in the South China Sea involved nearly a hundred U.S. Navy warships, including thirteen aircraft carriers carrying close to a thousand planes. Target Hong Kong brings this massive operation down to a human scale by recounting the navy air raids through the experiences of one British POW and six American naval aviators who flew, fought, and sometimes died in the fiery skies over Hong Kong.     Please join us for our quarterly dinner series with some of the women servicemembers from the State’s 54th Civil Support Team: Protecting the State from Weapons of Mass Destruction. S.Sgt. Jaclyn Sommers, S.Sgt. Ava Kielisch, and Sgt. Schuylar Hagen will provide an overview of the 54th Civil Support Team’s (CST) capabilities and mission and demonstrate some downrange survey equipment along with a demo chemical lab to show an example of what the 54th CST would encounter on a mission. Each Mess Night at the Museum features a guest speaker, topic, dinner, drinks, and time to socialize before and after the talk.  Join us as we transform this historic naval tradition into our own. Ray's story includes experiences from 30 years of service with the U.S. Army during peacetime and combat in Vietnam, with events ranging from triumph to tragedy. It addresses the little-known realities a career soldier and his family must confront that we seldom hear of. Ray also offers his perspective of a 50-year period of history that changed America.     The 20th annual Wisconsin Veterans Museum Foundation golf outing, sponsored by U.S. Vet General Contracting LLC, is scheduled for Monday, July 15, 2024. The event will take place from 9 AM - 5:30 PM at the beautiful course at The Oaks Golf Course in Cottage Grove. Registration includes green fees, a cart with GPS, range balls, tee gifts, lunch and a heavy hors d'oeuvres reception following golf. Competitors will be divided into two separate divisions, allowing contestants the opportunity to compete with individuals in their own age group. Division one will be made up of contestants under 65 years of age. Division two will be contestants ages 65 and older. Winners in both divisions will receive prizes!  All proceeds from this event support educational programs and exhibits at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. REGISTRATION IS CLOSED!     The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs invites you to an evening reception at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum to honor the women who contributed to the  "In Her Boots"  window display on the Capitol Square. Wisconsin women veterans whose boots were featured in the initial rotation (June 11 - July 29) will have the opportunity to retrieve their boots from WDVA during this event. The second rotation of the "In Her Boots" exhibit will be accessible in the Wisconsin Veterans Museum window for an extended duration. Light appetizers, refreshments, and opportunities for camaraderie will be provided. This event is free, however, please RSVP through Event Brite so we can obtain an accurate count.  RSVP here.

"Talking Spirits Cemetery Tours: From Soldiers to Civil Servants" will bring viewers into Wisconsin's journey through the Civil War and beyond. These tours will feature four vignettes along the route, as historical actors portray significant Wisconsinites before, during, and after the Civil War, tracing the long history of suffrage and civic responsibility in Wisconsin.   • “Honor in the Air” Movie Screening

    SOLD OUT! Join us for a movie screening and discussion of Honor in the Air. It is a story of inspiration, dedication, valor and love, following the life of one soldier and those with whom he served. Wisconsin native, Captain Scott Alwin, served as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War with the 68th Assault Helicopter Company. He earned a record 136 Air Medals, but more important, he earned the respect of the men he served with and the love of a Vietnamese woman who became his wife. Scott Alwin was from Ft. Atkinson, attended UW-Madison for his undergrad degree, and is buried in Marathon County (Hamburg). Admission is free. Seating is limited to 60. Please RSVP here.

    Please join the Wisconsin Veterans Museum for a book talk with Mark Faultersack as he discusses his newest work about his father, who served in the Coast Guard from 1942 until 1945. Mark has published his World War ll journal and preserved many photos, sketches and artifacts from that time on the USCG Cutters Sea Cloud and Evergreen. This includes the original 150 foot long roll of sonar paper, on which the book's content was handwritten while aboard ship. REGISTER HERE This event is suitable for all ages.     Join us for our annual 'Salute to Veterans Tailgate' on Saturday, November 16, when the @UW Badgers host the Oregon Ducks at Camp Randall Stadium. The Tailgate will be located at Camp Randall Memorial Park, east of Camp Randall, across the street from the Kwik Trip. Look for a big red and white striped tent. The starting time is TBA as the game time kick-off has yet to be announced.

"A Troop, 1-105th CAV 2009 Security Mission in Iraq" Thursday, November 21, 2024 5:30 PM – 8 PM Please join us for our quarterly dinner series with senior leaders from the Wisconsin Army National Guard’s Troop A, 1-105th Cavalry Squadron. CSM (Retired) Curt Patrouille, CSM (Retired) Brian Bieniek, and LTC Matthew McDonald will provide an overview of A Troop's very unique mission throughout Iraq in 2009-2010. The unit conducted over 900 high risk force protection missions in preparation for the handover of authority from the US to the Iraqi government and received some of the highest accolades from senior federal officials over the course of the year.
