Twelve hundred Confederate soldiers, mostly from Alabama and Tennessee regiments, were captured in the late winter of 1862 and taken to a POW camp in Wisconsin. In a period of six weeks, 140 of them died and were buried far from their southern homes. What were the backgrounds of these men? What were the movements of their regiments, their battles? Why did so many die? Author Laurence Desotell skillfully answers these questions in his carefully researched text. Chris is a U.S. Air Force veteran and chairman of the Midwest Chapter of the Cold War Museum in Washington, D.C. Featuring the temporary exhibit, “Wisconsin Was There: Sharing the Legacies of Printmakers Who Served in the Military” and the evening’s program will be our Live from the Storefront Window Series. Guest artists will create and discuss their artwork from the museum’s storefront windows. Passers-by can observe and are welcomed into the museum to tour the galleries and chat with the artist. Rick Wolf, son of Wisconsin native and WWII Ace Fritz Wolf, will talk about his father’s heroics during his time as one of the first “Flying Tigers,” Navy combat aviator, and his post-war life. Together with the Feast of Crispian organization, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum is hosting the event, “Walking with William: a Workshop Connecting Veterans, Their Stories, and Our Community Through the Words of Shakespeare.” Veterans and their families are invited to work with trained actors to explore and express their personal stories through the works of Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s stories are often the stories of war, the return from war, the veteran’s struggles to reconnect with civilian life. Using the special techniques Feast of Crispian staff employ to connect veterans with the Shakespearean scenes, they find themselves on a 400-year-old continuum of experience and not alone. This event is free to veterans and their families, but you must register in advance. Space is limited to 15 people.
