This free event will be based on 3 rounds of trivia, with each round focusing on topics such as: history, pop culture, names and places, events, and fun facts! For this virtual trivia night, we will be using the Kahoot! app. This app will allow for the multiple choice questions we will use during each round. Simply log onto Kahoot.it the night of the event (either through your mobile device or on a separate browser tab) and we will provide the access code…nothing to download and easy to use. Movie Night Virtual Discussion – Jarhead (2005)

Grab some popcorn and a seat in your favorite chair, and join us for a Movie Night and Virtual Discussion with the Wisconsin Veterans Museum Staff. While we can’t all be together, we can share discussion on major motion pictures that deal with the hardships, humor, and horrors of combat. For December, we will look at the life of a Marine sniper during Operation Desert Storm with 2005’s Jarhead. Following the story of a Marine Corps recruit who is sent to Iraq during Operation Desert Storm, this film focuses on the uncertainty of war and home as this Marine tries to maintain his composure and return alive and unharmed. Your mission is to watch the movie, which is available from most libraries or on streaming services (we will not be watching the movie the night of the program), while thinking about the discussion questions we will provide you. On December 17, 2021, at 7:00 pm we’ll all meet via Zoom for a discussion led by museum staff. We will cover themes such as conflict, politics, pop culture, the military, and movie-making. After you register, we will email you the discussion questions and a link to join the virtual discussion via Zoom. This event is free and open to the public. This event is suitable for mature audiences as there is strong language throughout and graphic scenes of war violence. Book Talk with Annette Grunseth- Combat and Campus: Writing Through War

Join us for a Book Talk with Annette Langlois Grunseth – Combat and Campus: Writing Through War  An infantryman's riveting letters from Vietnam, preserved for fifty years by his family, share experiences of living the war that are honest, raw, and graphic. A journalist and soldier with the 25th Infantry Division, riding armored personnel carriers into rice paddies, engaging in night time sweeps of the combat area, Sgt. Peter Langlois chronicles the smells, sights, and sounds during some of the darkest days of the war from 1968 - '69. He would return home to a nation still protesting the war in which his younger sister, Annette, had walked to class behind National Guardsmen marching across the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. Their correspondence and her poetry offer a unique perspective of the war in Vietnam and social change happening at home. Together, they share what was learned and what was lost. Virtual Drink & Draw January with Army Veteran Guest Artist: Amber Zora

Welcome to Sumi Ink Painting. Using an image from the  Wisconsin Veterans Museum collection, guest artist Amber Zora will teach about Sumi Ink Painting and explore materials with essentials about paper, brushes, brush strokes, controlling water, and ways to use your brushes to the fullest abilities. You will look at the elements of composition and design principles in historical ink paintings to discover how artists have used negative space. Also, we will discuss different image transfer techniques to map out a composition. Let's start working on an ink painting together and by the end of the course you will have the techniques you need to complete your ink painting on your own. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography + Integrated Media from Ohio University. Zora has exhibited her work in local and national galleries including the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Las Vegas Contemporary Art Center and the National Veteran Art Museum, among other notable spaces. Zora was enlisted in the US Army for eight years and deployed to Qayyarah West, Iraq as an ammunition specialist from 2006-2007 with the 592nd Ordnance Company. Drink & Draw events are a longstanding tradition in the art community where people gather to draw in a welcoming environment without inhibitions. Although the events often coincide with happy-hour style programming, there is no requirement or emphasis on alcoholic consumption. Mess Night: Shayne Jarosz

Join us for our first Mess Night of 2022 featuring Shayne Jarosz, Special Events Coordinator at the Iwo Jima Association of America. Iwo Jima was returned to the nation of Japan in 1968, and the U.S. maintained an agreement that veterans or family would be able to visit Iwo Jima anytime they wanted to return. 75 years after the battle, the island is closed. Now, the Iwo Jima Association is the only organization authorized to travel to the island. Jarosz discusses the Battle of Iwo Jima's legacy and how we as Americans can help keep the island open. Each MESS NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM features a guest speaker, topic, dinner, drinks, and time to socialize before and after the talk. Registration will be required before the event.
