Join us for our first Mess Night of 2022 featuring Shayne Jarosz, Special Events Coordinator at the Iwo Jima Association of America. Iwo Jima was returned to the nation of Japan in 1968, and the U.S. maintained an agreement that veterans or family would be able to visit Iwo Jima anytime they wanted to return. 75 years after the battle, the island is closed. Now, the Iwo Jima Association is the only organization authorized to travel to the island. Jarosz discusses the Battle of Iwo Jima's legacy and how we as Americans can help keep the island open. Each MESS NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM features a guest speaker, topic, dinner, drinks, and time to socialize before and after the talk. Registration will be required before the event. Cold days, warm colors. Grab your colored pencils and draw images of the cold using warm tones. Join us for our virtual Drink & Draw events as our Artist In-Residence, Yvette Pino, leads you through a delightful drawing experience inspired by images from the Wisconsin Veterans Museum collection. So gather your supplies, pour yourself a beverage, and bring your artistic energy as we spend the evening together stretching our creative muscles. This event is free of charge and open to anyone who registers. We will send you a link to join the event after you register. REGISTER HERE Drink & Draw events are a longstanding tradition in the art community where people gather to draw in a welcoming environment without inhibitions. Although the events often coincide with happy-hour style programming, there is no requirement or emphasis on alcoholic consumption. Some of the best attended Drink & Draws are dry and we are just fine with that. While we can’t all be together, we can share discussion on major motion pictures that deal with the hardships, humor, and horrors of combat. For February, we will look at 1976's Shout at the Devil.  REGISTER HERE Your mission is to watch the movie, which is available from most libraries or on streaming services (we will not be watching the movie the night of the program), while thinking about the discussion questions we will provide you. On February 25, 2022, at 7:00 pm we’ll all meet via Zoom for a discussion led by museum staff. We will cover themes such as conflict, politics, pop culture, the military, and movie-making. After you register, we will email you the discussion questions and a link to join the virtual discussion via Zoom. This event is free and open to the public. Join the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and President of the African American Genealogical Society of Milwaukee Patricia Glover-Howard, for a workshop focusing on African American genealogy. This program is suitable for children, youth, and adults. We will provide military, local, state, federal and national resources for the genealogical journey. Case studies, DNA and other examples will be used to create the Family History Toolkit. This event is free, virtual, and suitable for all ages.
